In July 2007, I took a 13 hour plane ride to Beijing; later that day, another airplane to Chengdu, and the next day, another flight, finally to Lhasa, Tibet. I trekked in the mountains and explored Lhasa and the monasteries. My sense of wonder was awakened one day by the rituals of the daily life of a nomad yak herder family and another day by pilgrims walking along high hillside trails hanging prayer flags, burning incense and leaving photographs of their spiritual leaders. The monasteries exterior architecture shaped by the climate and extreme altitude left me inspired to research the history of this land. I met painters and people stitching, metal workers and archivists working to restore the opulent interior spaces and texts. Tibetans walk constantly and endure hardship unimaginable in the West. The prayer flags are a token of remembrance and the joy they imparted to me with butter tea in exchange for Cliff Bars, in making their acquaintance high on the edge of the cliffs.
